The Jazz Age

Deco geometry, the bob, and the powder compact. The decade beauty stopped hiding.

Cosmetics leave the dressing table for the handbag. Visible color becomes respectable at last, and Coty's powders, Pond's twin creams, and Elizabeth Arden's Fifth Avenue salon make beauty a modern, buyable identity for the bobbed, Deco woman.

In the society titles a second revolution runs in parallel. Chanel bottles an abstract perfume under her own name in 1921, and Guerlain, Lanvin, and Bourjois follow onto the pages of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, turning scent into couture with a designer's name on the bottle.

“Perfume becomes couture, and the fragrance brand a luxury in its own right.”
