A hundred-year presence, from the record

Pond's owned a decade. Then it lost one.

Pond's owned the 1920s. Then Lux took the 1930s. This is not a model. It is a reading of the actual magazine pages, decade by decade, in paid advertising.

What the record shows

01Pond's was the loudest beauty advertiser of the 1920s, at 22% of the tracked paid voice, built on a steady run of full-page cream advertising.
02In the 1930s the position reversed. Lux moved to 23% against Pond's's 17%, and held the lead as the film-star era rewarded Lux's Hollywood campaigns.
03By the 1950s Pond's's share had fallen to 2% as a new generation of houses entered the field. The decade it believed it owned was the decade it quietly ceded.

How we know this

Muse Parlor reads the scanned magazine pages themselves, finds each brand as it was printed, verifies it against the printed word, and scores each placement for quality on the same engine as the live contemporary model. The series is descriptive. It reports how Pond's appeared in the record, not why. The full method is public. Read the methodology →
